I came across this question earlier this week. In the context of the question, the person who asked it wanted to use their religion to keep the divorce from going through. Unfortunately, in North Carolina, there is virtually no defense to an action for absolute divorce. As long as you are separated for at least one year, with an intent to remain separated, then either spouse can petition the court for a divorce.
Unlike other countries, in the United States, a legal marriage is separate from getting married in the church (or temple or synagogue). If you are going to get divorced, even though your religion may prohibit it, from a legal standpoint there is nothing you can do to keep your spouse from divorcing you.
