You know, it is hard enough for us attorneys to keep a good reputation without stories like this in the news. Apparently, this divorce lawyer from Chicago thought it would be a good idea to write $50,000 in bad checks from an account that was closed. Kicker to the story is that he had 10 pending state bar complaints against him for taking money from clients but failing to do anything on their cases.
Moral of this story? Make sure you know who you are hiring for your divorce. Do some background checking, look up their bar record, see if they have a history of complaints, look at the organizations they are involved with, etc. Don’t hire someone on the fly. There is a ton of information on the internet these days – do your checking before you go to see the attorney.
